A little about what decorative concrete is

Since its creation, concrete has earned the title of being the artificial material with the longest lifespan. Its coarse, ugly monolith was neatly concealed behind facades that took the shape of load-bearing components.

However, human ingenuity never stopped striving to create something beautiful out of a gray mass without sacrificing quality because, as always, we wanted more. Decorative concrete first emerged in this form during the latter part of the 20th century.

  • binder – ordinary Portland cement, less often a lime base;

  • dye – pigmentation is the main distinguishing feature of decorative concrete. But it is not always possible to find a colored version of such a mixture. Recently, gray concrete has become popular.

There is a unique mixture that resembles cement paste that is used to create small decorative interior items. All you have to do is dilute it with the necessary amount of water to create. Essentially, this is a self-compacting mixture that forms a perfectly smooth, light gray concrete surface after it has hardened.

The sole disadvantage is that this type of decorative concrete for modeling is manufactured abroad. Such a product is not available in our stores, "even with fire."

The simplest and most noticeable application of decorative concrete is found in colored pavement and facing facade components, which are seen every day. However, these products are now so ingrained in our daily lives that, regrettably, we fail to appreciate their full beauty.

Quality characteristics as the foundation of durability

Still, the most important thing is to prioritize quality over beauty. This is something that the designers of decorative concrete keep in mind as they strive for more than just aesthetic success. The addition of plasticizers, which improve strength and plasticity, is given special attention.

However, this is all poetic language; let’s examine the realities that await decorative concrete consumers:

  • Brand – usually concrete grades M300, M350 are taken. Their strength indicators are quite sufficient for garden paths with high traffic.
  • Frost resistance – brand F150 – F Not a bad indicator, but for regions with a sharp changeable climate it is not enough. It can be increased with the help of additives, more thorough vibration and adding less water.
  • Water permeability – brand W5 – W For dense mixtures of the same class, a similar brand is much higher.
  • Crack resistance – in case of intensive use and with a large area of ​​the poured surface, decorative concrete is reinforced with masonry mesh. This extends the service life of the coating, preventing cracking.

These, in theory, are the primary characteristics that define decorative concrete as a long-lasting and wear-resistant material that can be used to create unique, incredibly beautiful objects and coatings of all kinds.

“Family” of decorative concrete

Skilled builders’ inventiveness never stops and is always in search of something novel and uncommon. Unprecedented decorative concrete variations are created through the application of cutting-edge technologies, providing momentary aesthetic satisfaction until the new trend wins over millions of hearts.

What is the current market presentation of decorative concrete, then?

Pigmentation

Adding color is the simplest and least expensive way to create decorative concrete. This is effectively handled by special dyes that are added to the working mixture during the preparation phase. You obtain colored concrete in any shade as a result.

However, you won’t get a bright shade of gray concrete no matter how you decorate it. Painters’ base is created with white cement. Although it costs an order of magnitude more than the typical gray, its quality attributes are exactly the same.

It is only used for decorative purposes as a result. Examples of painting concrete on different types of cement are seen in the photo below. As you can see, colored concrete has a much brighter, "cleaner" tone when it is placed on white cement.

Another way to add color and beauty to the surface of decorative concrete is to use colored hardener. One such material is a ready-made blend of additives, white cement, and pigment.

On recently prepared concrete, it is sprayed on. Not only does it become brilliant once it hardens, but it also becomes resistant to various acid reagents, fading, and abrasion surfaces.

Similar items can cost thousands of euros on websites in other countries. But if you can create such understated beauty with your own hands, why pay more?

Once upon a time, recycled or crushed glass was considered a true breakthrough in the field of concrete decoration. It’s a tiny piece of regular colored sheet glass. The finished stone is ground after a concrete mixture containing small granules of different sizes is combined, revealing the coating’s unique beauty.

These decorative concretes are most commonly used to make tabletops. However, it can also be found in buildings or on garden paths, though not always in the same combination.

Marble chips were added to concrete by our grandfathers. It was common to find such floors in Soviet-era schools. Ordinary concrete was mixed with marble chips to produce a polished surface that was both elegant and strong.

And the builders had complete success. Ultimately, marble chips give concrete a percentage boost in strength and an intriguing texture that mimics real stone.

Although many people may be surprised, glowing decorative concrete is not a recent development. Although it was released roughly ten years ago, it was not widely distributed for unspecified reasons.

A unique effect like this is produced by adding pebbles or a special powder to the working mixture. Similar to phosphorus, they store solar energy during the day and release it into the nighttime environment.
