Technology

When pondering how to polish concrete, it’s important to examine every step of the process.

  • Checking the compressive strength of concrete (the indicator should be at least 20 MPa)
  • Performing initial grinding
  • Careful leveling of the surface, repair of cracks
  • Cleaning the floor, removing dust and debris
  • Applying impregnations to the surface
  • High-quality sealing of pores and minimal defects using cement
  • Grinding the upper raw layer
  • High-quality polishing after drying using special abrasive devices until the surface reaches the desired level of gloss
  • At will (or need) – painting the floor with a colored hardener
  • Coating concrete with finishing polish, various anti-slip compounds, etc.d.

Both new and old coatings can be polished. Before the main stage of work, all impregnations remove dust by penetrating directly into the material and increasing its hydrophobicity and structural density. Lithium silicate-based compositions, such as Ultralit or LITSIL, Stain Protection, are typically selected for these uses.

Large sections of commercial buildings, malls, institution lobbies, etc. should be ground using high-powered, specialized equipment.

A grinder can be used for polishing at home; it will take longer and result in a lower-quality surface, but it is an easy and accessible option.

Tool

Concrete polishing technology requires the use of a specialized tool. Here, we are discussing a mechanically assisted multi-stage abrasive processing of a concrete surface.

Grinding methods

  • Thorough cleaning of the surface – shot blasting or milling removes dirt, a layer of old coating, etc.d.
  • Accurate removal of defects – potholes, cracks, seams. Epoxy mastic is used to level concrete. It is necessary to eliminate all protrusions/irregularities so that the machine does not cling to them when polishing.
  • Performing the first grinding – provided that the screed is smooth, this step can be skipped. Initial rough grinding is performed with 400 grit (37 µm) diamond discs.
  • Chemical treatment of the screed with a hardener, which contains components that interact with calcium hydroxide in the solution. The structure of the monolith becomes more durable and strong. At the end of the stage, impregnation is applied.
  • Finish grinding, polishing – performed using discs with a grain of at least 400 grit. To give the floor a shine and gloss at the end of the stage, polishing is done with diamond-coated discs with a grain of 1500-3000 grit.

Errors

It is best to familiarize yourself with all typical errors and issues before beginning work. If you don’t know how to polish concrete at home, all you can do is screw it up.

  • Performing operations not in a strictly specified sequence
  • Polishing with a low-quality tool with incorrectly adjusted rotation speed indicators, degree of roughness
  • Refusal to use special high-quality impregnations
  • Reluctance to remove dust after each pass
  • Processing concrete of class below B22.5
  • Choosing insufficiently strong crushed stone as a filler
  • Refusal to maintain the technology – first of all, the drying time of impregnations

Do-it-yourself polishing

After the floor has fully solidified, all concrete polishing is done. A respirator, safety glasses, an angle grinder, brushes with corundum coating, a milling machine with hard alloy elements, and a grinding machine with corundum or diamond-coated elements could all be necessary for grinding.

The surface is first cleared of any debris, dust, and old coatings before any imperfections are fixed. Deep milling is the necessary treatment if the damage is severe. The waves won’t go away (you’ll need to fill the screed for them), and grinding will remove the grooves.

The top layer of concrete that developed as a result of the cement milk solidifying is removed through grinding. Because the milk keeps the sealant’s composition from penetrating the concrete’s structure, a thin layer is removed to reveal the filler, which can be crushed stone, granite chips, limestone, or gravel. Only when the concrete has solidified and can hold the filler for at least two to three weeks after pouring, should this be done.

The type of cutting segments is selected in accordance with the grade of concrete – for M250 and above, diamond coating is suitable, if the grade is lower, you can use corundum. But it is desirable that the grade of concrete for the floor be at least M300, otherwise it will not be possible to guarantee positive characteristics and high-quality processing.

In the absence of specialized tools, polishing is done using appropriate metal brushes covered in corundum. Using a grinder, surfaces with protruding reinforcement parts are removed.

The steps involved are the same as for expert polishing: shot blasting or milling the surface to remove dirt and previous coatings, followed by filling in any cracks or potholes and sealing all expansion and shrinkage joints. They then use diamond discs with a grain size of up to 400 grit for rough grinding, impregnation to fortify the layer, more grinding with discs with a grain size of more than 400 grit, and segmentation with a spray grain of up to 3000 grit to complete the process.
