GOST requirements for the dimensions of curb stones
The 1991 publication GOST 6665 is the fundamental guide that establishes the dimensions of stones. Its range of use encompasses:
- stone;
- concrete;
- reinforced concrete;
- garden products for inner-city roads and intercity highways.
It offers the following primary features:
- length: 0.5;1.0;3.0 and 6.0 m;
- width from 300 to 450 mm;
- height from 150 to 180 mm.
Concrete stones up to three meters in length can be obtained by vibration pressing and vibration casting, in addition to natural stone products:
- granite;
- gabbro;
- travertine;
- quartzite.
Items longer than three meters are composed of reinforced concrete, which has internal reinforcement from class A-4 non-stressed reinforcement.
GOST states that curbs can be made in six different ways based on shape:
- ordinary rectilinear;
- rectilinear with expansion;
- rectilinear with contour width;
- straight with a gutter;
- curb;
- radial or curved.
For road stones, these products are composed of concrete classes B22.5 and B30, and for highway stones, B>30. In this instance, granite or reinforced concrete products are required. These indicators will determine their weight, which for stone and concrete is between 60 and 1400 kg.

Granite and vibro-pressed, vibro-cast reinforced concrete are the most common materials used for road curbs in high-stress areas. Lower strength requirements from B 22.5 and frost resistance from F200 apply to them. In 90% of cases, these changes are implemented in populated areas and urban improvement systems.
Most typical lengths of travel:
- concrete – 1000 x 300 x 150 mm, 100 kg;
- concrete – 1000 x 300 x 180 mm, 120 kg;
- granite GP 1 – 1000x180x300 mm, 122 kg.
The most resilient granite and concrete vibropressed stones in compliance with GOST 6665 are used to make garden borders. These materials can be produced in lengths of 500 mm and 1000 mm, heights up to 200 mm, thickness up to 80 mm, and weights between 18 and 36 kg.
Depending on the material of the curb
For these products, the most widely used material is:
- concrete;
- reinforced concrete;
- granite is used less often.

Utilizing cutting-edge technology, polymer sand products are made from leftover food plastic and sand. Measuring 500x200x80 mm, they fit perfectly on standard garden concrete pavers and walkways with tile or stone surfaces.
Strips of plastic and metal measuring 3 to 10 m in length, 100 mm in height, and 2 mm in width for steel and 5 mm for rubber and plastic are produced.
How to determine which one is right?
The final purpose of the road surface determines the size of the curbs and how they are modified; the construction product must be such that it prevents the paving material from being destroyed and fits in with the improvement area’s landscape design:
- For highways and city roads choose highway and road curbstone made of concrete, reinforced concrete and natural granite of gray color.
- When arranging park areas use regular gray road curbstone with standard sections of 300×150 mm or a narrower size of 200×80 mm. Sometimes curbs with a gutter are installed here so that it is possible to work with a lawn mower. The length of the products is 1 m; for curved sections, stones with a length of 0 are used.5 m.
- For weak soil special curbs with a wide base are installed to prevent soil and main road surface subsidence.
- For landscaping of private housing construction 500x200x80 mm curbs made of concrete, obtained by vibration pressing, vibration casting or polymer sand stones are most often used.
They can match the color scheme of the house objects and pathways, and they can be any color. Thinner and narrower products made of plastic, rubber, and metal are used for the garden’s green areas and vegetable garden. These products serve as a decorative barrier between these areas rather than bearing a heavy mechanical load.

- City roads – road concrete, reinforced concrete, granite: 1000x300x180; 1000x300x150; 3000x300x150; 500x300x150 mm, gray, sometimes colored;
- Sidewalks – concrete and polymer sand stones: 500x200x80; 500x150x60; 500x150x40 mm, gray and colored.
- Gardens and parks – concrete, polymer sand stones, plastic and rubber; length from 0.5 m for concrete and polymer sand stones; up to 2 for stainless steel fences; up to 10 m for rubber and plastic; cross-section from 150×80 mm for concrete and polymer-sand stones; up to 2 X 100 mm for steel; different colors.
You must select high-quality products when deciding on border size and modification. To achieve this, only purchase them from reputable vendors who have quality certifications. These documents have to list the product’s attributes, manufacturing process, measurements, and GOST compliance.
It’s crucial to keep an eye on the certificate’s issue date to make sure it hasn’t expired. If such a document does not exist, the products are probably of low quality and will not be able to fulfill their intended purpose because they are not resistant to mechanical or atmospheric influences, such as moisture and frost.
Only the roadway construction project, during the design calculations of all loads on it and taking into account the terrain, climatic, and geological characteristics of the territory, determines the modification of curbstones for the road surface of highways, city, and inner-city roads. These indicators are established in the landscape project for private construction.
The following considerations must be made when selecting curb sizes if the developer intends to enhance a portion of the neighborhood on his own:
- Know the height of the underlying layers that will be used to strengthen concrete, reinforced concrete, granite and polymer sand stones, usually from 30 to 50 mm.
- Consider the depth in the ground from 50 mm.
- Consider the thickness of the coating from 50 mm.
- Consider the protrusion above the coating from 60 mm.
- The length is selected based on the straightness of the section, for straight ones from 1000 to 6000 mm, and for curved ones – 500 mm.
- The width is selected according to the load: for highways no less than 180 mm, for city roads no less than 150 mm, for curbs and garden tiles no less than 60 mm.
The integrity of the blind area and underlying layers will be better and longer preserved if the curb stone is installed deeper.

- Take into account a margin of at least 10%: 200×1.1=220 m.
